The Fredericton Folks on Spokes

Our story started in 2000 with a small group of Fredericton seniors (50 plus) who wanted to be active together and cycle the area’s main trails. Every Tuesday morning, we would meet at the Trail Visitor Centre to bike on the city trails. In the beginning, our group was 10 to 20. Folks on SpokesDuring the next few years there were changes, as with all groups. Some folks retired from biking for various reasons, but many more have joined, increasing our numbers in the past years to 30-40 weekly. We have no membership fees and everyone is welcome to ride any distance, which always includes rest stops and lots of time to chat (which is as important perhaps as the exercise!). Every week on Tuesday mornings we get together and ride the Gibson/Nashwaak Trail, the Lincoln Trail, the Northside Trail, the Valley Trail… Everyone goes to their own pace. No matter your skill level, you will have fun and meet interesting Folks! Some of us like to explore beyond the city trail system. With the need for adventure and sometimes speed, we head over to Mactaquac Dam and Oromocto, using trails and roads. There is also a smaller group who do even longer rides. In the past years, we have included some longer 2 and 3 day trips to destinations like Grand Falls, and we also took part inFolks on Spokes2 June 1st Parks and Trails Day and Bike for Breath in 2014. When the biking season is over at the end of October, the group has an end-of-season dinner. Soon after, we trade our bikes for a pair of skates to start our Skate Tuesdays at the Lady Beaverbrook rink. Our group started years ago with one goal in mind and keeps at it to this day: be active, meet new people and have a good time! We loved her friendship, sense of adventure and leadership in biking on the Fredericton Trails and around the province on longer rides and we all miss her tremendously. But her light remains with us and we wanted to pay her tribute by keeping on sharing our story, which she contributed to write. Thank you Ruth! -The Folks on Spokes Fredericton family
